The Hydros® SL challenges everything you know about fly reels. A superlarge arbor means quick retrieval rates. A sealed carbon drag—the clutch bearing is fully sealed inside the drag mechanism—means this reel is ready for whatever conditions you choose to throw at it. And we made the drag stronger with zero start-up inertia and an asymmetric drag knob for tactile, no-look drag adjustments. A narrow spool means less line stacking, and we added an increased backing capacity. Combined with an ultrafast retrieval rate, this puts you in control of the fight. It has a fully sealed drag-clutch bearing mechanism, which means it’s good to go for fishing the salt. The price to performance makes it one of the best reel values on the market. Now you can have an amazing reel to handle anything from creek fishing for Brookies to bay fishing for Tarpon -without breaking the budget.
Shop Staff Notes: A year before this reel came out on the market we got to field test this reel up on the Skeena system for wild Steelhead. We used the Orvis Hydros SL Reel in size V and loaded it up with 550 grain Skagit line, running line and 30# backing to throw on a Helios 2 11′ 8wt Switch Rod. The size V fit that outfit just right and would be even better (more backing) on a 7 weight. The drag is incredibly smooth and also crazy powerful. It was able to handle some hot steel fresh from the salt without a hiccup. The sealed drag system is nice -especially in sub-freezing temps as often your reel get wet (rain/snow or setting your rod in the water so you can use two hands on 36″ of anadromous adrenaline for the hero shot and release!). We have now used these reels in sizes II and III for lots of trout fishing and the IV and V reels for big game and saltwater and can honestly say that this real is durable, smooth and has handled everything we have thrown at it. It compares with reels that are twice the price.
