This 7-weight Spey rod, just shy of 12 feet, is a cannon that you’ll want in your arsenal. With the backbone to battle summer and winter steelhead, and a smooth swing you’ll appreciate during a long day on the water, this is a strong choice for the angler seeking to add a two-handed rig to their quiver. Often touted as the best all-around weight by steelhead experts, this 7-weight rod punches through stubborn wind and throws large flies with aplomb. Clearwater® Spey rods provide high-end performance at an excellent price, giving you the back-saving ease of two-handed casting with wallet-saving benefits. Now you can chase steelhead across the country and still have enough gas money to make it back home.

Shop Staff Notes:  The Orvis Clearwater 1197-4 Switch Rod is a great choice for lighter Steelhead or big trout (like LOG -Land of the Giants), or big rainbows in Alaska.  We recommend using the following fly lines with this rod:  Orvis Access Switch (7wt),  Orvis Hydros HD Switch (7wt or 8wt!),  RIO Scandi Short Versitip (in 7wt or 8wt!),  RIO Switch Chucker (7wt or 8wt),  RIO Skagit Short 475, or RIO Skagit Short 525,

We have two Outfits that are a perfectly balanced and complete sets for easy casting and effective swinging:
Outfit #1 includes the very popular RIO Scandi-Short Versitip Shooting Head System that offers a lot of power for big, articulated flies but still allows you to deliver precise and delicate presentations for smaller flies or for swinging in shallow water or even skating dries on the surface.  This line is great for newer spey anglers or experts.  All you need to add to this Outfit system is a Leader and some Tippet -and of course your fly.

Outfit #2 includes the RIO Skagit Max VersiTip is an excellent, all-in-one line/head/tips package to make spey simple for you.  All you need to do is add about 3′-6′ of leader or just tippet on the end and your fly and you are ready to ply with the waters for anadromous adrenaline!  (SET UP TIP:  Take an old leader -doesn’t really matter what leader, just one that the tippet end is trashed. From the perfection loop butt section, cut it off so it’s about 3′ long. Then tie a LARGE perfection loop on the smaller end (leave the small loop that came on the leader on the butt section). Loop the small loop (on the butt section) to the end of the MOW Tip.  Then loop about 12″-15″ of tippet material (I use Mirage Fluoracarbon Tippet in 0X to 20#) on the end of that. Your fly will be tied to the end of that (I use a Non-Slip Mono Loop).  You can pre-tie flies with the tippet and than just loop-to-loop them on the end of your leader, super quick, super easy -especially when your fingers are numb. Also makes changing MOW tips a breeze, just doing loop-to-loop and never having to cut or tie on anything.)
