Love the feel of a 6-weight switch rod but worried the 12-foot-plus length is just a bit too much for the waters you haunt? Enter the 11′ 6-weight Clearwater Switch. Swing for trout on the Yellowstone and punch past the determined Paradise Valley wind. Ideal for tossing large streamers when the conditions are tough, this rod will be your new best friend when the spring storms blow through. Clearwater® Switch rods provide high-end performance at an excellent price, giving you the back-saving ease of two-handed casting with wallet-saving benefits. Now you can chase trout across the country and still have enough gas money to make it back home.

Shop Staff Notes:  The Orvis Clearwater 116-4 Switch Rod is a fun choice for trout and is a perfect rod for someone new to the 2-handed game. Light enough for comfortable casting and for trout fishing but enough power to overcome some spey casting weaknesses. That’s not to say this is a beginner’s rod as it’s performance is surely appreciated by an experienced spey caster looking for a fun rod to throw big flies for trout or maybe even use for small Steelhead or other species. The trend in “Trout Spey” is to go super light, like 2, 3 or 4 weights, but there’s nothing wrong with having more power for easier casting by using a 5 or a 6 weight.  We think the 5 and 6 weights offer a bit more versatility than the super lightweight trout speys and can be much easier to cast larger flies or use more a variety of sink tips or when the wind kicks up. The 11′ 6-weight switch rod is an excellent choice for the Missouri and especially the Land of the Giants section below Hauser where you can encounter some monster trout!

We have three Outfits that are a perfectly balanced and complete sets for easy casting and effective swinging:
Outfit #1 includes the very popular RIO Scandi-Short Versitip Shooting Head System that offers a lot of power for big, articulated flies but still allows you to deliver precise and delicate presentations for smaller flies or for swinging in shallow water or even skating dries on the surface.  This line is great for newer spey anglers or experts.  All you need to add to this Outfit system is a Leader and some Tippet -and of course your fly.

Outfit #2 includes the RIO Skagit Max VersiTip is an excellent, all-in-one line/head/tips package to make spey simple for you.  All you need to do is add about 3′-6′ of leader or just tippet on the end and your fly and you are ready to ply with the waters for anadromous adrenaline!  (SET UP TIP:  Take an old leader -doesn’t really matter what leader, just one that the tippet end is trashed. From the perfection loop butt section, cut it off so it’s about 3′ long. Then tie a LARGE perfection loop on the smaller end (leave the small loop that came on the leader on the butt section). Loop the small loop (on the butt section) to the end of the MOW Tip.  Then loop about 12″-15″ of tippet material (I use Mirage Fluoracarbon Tippet in 0X to 20#) on the end of that. Your fly will be tied to the end of that (I use a Non-Slip Mono Loop).  You can pre-tie flies with the tippet and than just loop-to-loop them on the end of your leader, super quick, super easy -especially when your fingers are numb. Also makes changing MOW tips a breeze, just doing loop-to-loop and never having to cut or tie on anything.)

Outfit #3 includes the awesome RIO InTouch Switch Chucker fly line.  This line is super easy to cast and is an integrated fly line -meaning there are no loop-to-loop connections so it slides through he guides easily.  This line is powerful and super easy to cast. It can chuck heavy sink tips and big flies just like a Skagit line but it does have a long, 14′ handling section that allows for more versatility than a Skagit.  This line can easily fish effectively a Nymph Rig set up or even throw a dry fly (though it’s much better for skating dries, not fishing them up stream, dead drift -it’s too chunky and clunky to fish a dry fly delicately. Skating is good with this line. Strainer has used this line for skated dries for Steelhead in BC.)  We include 3 different medium RIO Skagit MOW tips (float, half sink, full sink).  You can set up the leader system exactly as described in Outfit #2 above.
