Ideal for switch rods, the Hydros HD switch line features our newest textured line technology for the ultimate in line speed, shootability and flotation. Comfortable to cast overhand, single or double hand, and to execute a variety of spey casts. Crafted around an exclusive Orvis taper, it features a 34-foot head with a moderate length front taper and compact back taper. Color change along the entire back taper aids the caster in determining the ‘sweet spot’ for a particular setup. To help maximize performance, combine this line with one of our 10′ salmon/steelhead polyleaders (1R5K). HD texturing provides increased surface area, allowing the line to sit higher in the water, offering less drag, easier mending, less water spray, and easier pick-ups. The micro-textured surface traps air to provide increases in both shootability and flotation while decreasing friction, and the microreplicated pattern increases line durability.
Shop Staff Notes: Excellent all around line for Switch Rods! We use this line for dry flies, nymphing with indicators (amazing!) and swinging soft hackles on regular leaders and swinging or striping streamers using Versileaders. It’s also a great line to use on the longer, Spey Rods -perfect for skating dries or swinging smaller flies. [We recommend bumping up 1 to 2 line sizes when using on Spey Rods (ie, use an 8 or 9wt line on a 13′ 7-wt Spey Rod.)] HD (textured) lines are so amazing to cast. They are our favorites to fish because of their performance and durability. We tell people that they will add 10′-15′ of distance with the same casting stroke as their old, non-textured line! That’s not a sales pitch, it’s true! They float great, mend crazy good and we’ve already mentioned their castability. Yes, they make some noise as the line is flying through the guides and they can burn your finger if your stripping streamer quickly with them but those are not enough of a negative to not use this line. The zing noise can actually help you in casting by helping with your timing (you’ll know exactly when line is moving through the guides -and one of the main keys in fly casting is, “There shall not be any line moving through the guides until it’s time!”) The figure burn with the streamers is fixed easily with a Buff Finger Sleeve. Bottom line about this line -you will love it!
