It began as a supremely accurate 9′ 5″ 5-wt. boat rod, with superb long-range mending abilities on both reach casts and on-the-water drift manipulations straight to the indicator. Field-testing proved it’s also a 5-wt. that impresses when it’s time to hop a gunnel and fish backchannel sippers on foot. The product of strong collaboration, this is a high-concept rod born of a deep need from storied guides and their long conversations with our design team. That extra five inches is the secret sauce, providing added lift on your back cast without feeling overwhelming, with the comparable length advantages of a 10-footer in a rod that feels more like a 9. Shop Staff Notes:  The Orvis Helios 3 Blackout 9’5″ 5-weight Fly Rod is one of the best mid to big river boat or wade fishing rod! This H3D can punch out a line like a cannon but with the accuracy of a laser pointer.  This is not a sales pitch or hyperbole (well, maybe a little bit hyperbolic).  This is a great rod to put a dry fly in a feeding lane at 45+ feet -common on the Missouri.  It also is excellent at turning over a buggy Chubby or PMX with a Turd dropper on the Smith, Blackfoot or other freestone.  The H3D 955-4 is also a great tool to flinging double nymph rigs and streamers with sinking leaders.  You can’t go wrong buying this rod if you like to fish rivers like the MO.
