Shop Staff Notes: The Orvis Clearwater 9’ 8-Weight Fly Rod is a rod we recommend for our customers that are heading to do some big game (fresh or saltwater) fly fishing but aren’t sure if this will be something they will do every year or a couple times a year. It’s also an excellent choice for a dedicated big game angler who is looking for a quality, back-up fly rod or one that they can have on hand for a friend to use. We used to not carry this rod configuration in the Clearwater series but after moving so many mid and high end rods, we though it would be smart to offer this practical fishing tool for folks that don’t want to spend $500 to $900 on a rod. You get a lot of bang for your buck with the Clearwater rod series. You do get more casting and fishing performance and American-made craftsmanship when you bump in price and go for a Recon and certainly to a Helios 3D. But if your budget keeps you under $250, the Clearwater is an excellent choice.
We have made up 9 different UPGRADED Rod Outfit Packages to give you some options based on our recommendations. We strongly recommend at least upgrading from the Clearwater Fly Line. The Clearwater line is good but upgrading to the Orvis Hydros or Scientific Anglers Amplitude series are well worth it -they cast better, float better and will last longer. We also include 4 Outfits with the reel upgraded to the popular Battenkill Disc Mid-Arbor Reel or Hydros Large-Arbor Reel.
